* * * *

Bren drove us straight from Avery's to his house and marched me into his kitchen. He insisted on lunch, and I wasn't about to stand between him and his food. He sat me down at the kitchen table as he moved around the cupboards.

"So what's the timeline on this rebirth of yours?"

The coffee maker rumbled and hissed as Bren sat down at the round oak table with a can of soda and a couple lunchmeat sandwiches on a paper plate.

He'd cut them into neat triangles.

"Do you really want to know?" I studied him as he scarfed down one of the perfect geometric shapes.

He swallowed, took a sip of soda, and cleared his throat.

"Yup. You're my pet project while Mom's in town. Besides, what kind of a scientist would I be if I didn't study you while I could? Even if I can't publish a paper on you, you're bound to be interesting."

"You study plants," I said, raising an eyebrow. "Not animals or mythology."

"It's the principle of the thing," Bren said, squashing away my argument with a wave of his sandwich. "Tell me about the process."

"Fine." I closed my eyes and rubbed my temples, wondering where on earth to start. The beginning, my brain supplied. "First I have to build a nest, which is something I'll do in bird form.

I've already picked out a solid, sturdy oak tree not immediately surrounded by other trees in my back yard. That way I won't go setting a forest fire if something goes wrong. Next I have to collect all the plants, incense, spices, resins, and oils I need for the ceremony. Each serves a different purpose in my rebirth and if I don't have everything, my new incarnation turns out a little wonky for a while. I have most of what I'll need in the trunk of my car, but I still need to find spikenard."

"Do you need the plant itself or just the oil?"

"Having the root of the plant is better, but oil will do in a pinch. My memory will take longer to come back with just the oil, but that's still far better than nothing. I looked into finding the plant, but it doesn't look likely that I'd be able to get it on time. Customs rules have gotten a little stricter since the last time I did this. I thought I had time or I would have ordered it months ago."

"I might be able to help with getting the root," Bren said.

"Oh?"

"I'm a botanist, as you were so kind to remind me." He waved his sandwich in the general direction of the college campus. "I've got contacts in the department who have all the paperwork filled out for importing foreign plants. I should be able to get a spikenard sample in a month. Maybe sooner."

"I appreciate it, though a month might not be soon enough," I said. "I should still get the oil too, in case I go early."

"We can order that online now, just so we know it'll be here on time.
